South Korea indicts Yoon, former officials over Lee’s Australia flight
Yoon is accused of ordering Lee’s appointment as ambassador to Australia in November 2023 to help him evade an investigation into his alleged interference in a military probe into a Marine’s death earlier that year. He faces charges including facilitating Lee’s departure, abusing his power, and violating the State Public Officials Act.
The counsel team also claims that Yoon orchestrated Lee’s appointment to delay the investigation into the Marine’s death and prevent scrutiny from focusing on himself.
Investigators are examining whether the presidential Office of National Security, the Foreign Ministry, and the Justice Ministry coordinated Lee’s appointment and exit from the country on Yoon’s alleged orders. Four days after his appointment, Lee’s travel ban was lifted, allowing him to fly to Australia shortly afterward. He returned 11 days later amid growing criticism over the trip.
Other officials indicted include former National Security Adviser Cho Tae-yong, former First Vice Foreign Minister Chang Ho-jin, former Justice Minister Park Sung-jae, and two additional individuals linked to the case.
Yoon was also indicted on Friday for allegedly interfering in the military investigation into Marine Cpl. Chae Su-geun’s death. Chae drowned in July 2023 during a search for flood victims in Yecheon County after being swept away by strong currents.
